Azelf Raid Counters Guide

Azelf is a member of the Lake Trio with Uxie and Mesprit, a legendary trio introduced in Generation 4. Azelf is a Psychic type, meaning it is weak to Dark, Bug, and Ghost types, while resisting Fighting and Psychic types. It is boosted by Windy weather, and leads to its capture CPs being in the following ranges:

  • 1752-1834 CP for a regular Level 20 encounter
  • 2190-2293 CP for a Windy weather boosted encounter (Level 25)

Azelf has a stat composition of 270 Attack, 151 Defense, and 181 Stamina leading to a Max CP of 3210. What this means is that, in comparison to the middle of the road Mespirit and the defense oriented Uxie, Azelf will be the easiest of the three to challenge and require the least amount of players. It can be duoed fairly easily, but otherwise we would suggest you take on Azelf in groups of 3-7, for high level players, or 8-20, for lower leveled players.

Azelf is not yet available in Pokemon GO. This guide is an early preview of the fight to help you prepare.

Azelf raid counters

Azelf Raid Counters
Supreme Azelf Raid Counters
MewtwoMewtwoPsycho Cut PsychicShadow Ball * Ghost
Fact of life, if something is weak to Ghost, then legacy Shadow Ball Mewtwo will be the default counter to go to. It can dole out just as much damage as a Gengar, with less faints overall. It is the supreme Ghost attacker, despite not even being one.
  • * Shadow Claw Ghost
  • * Lick Ghost
  • Hex Ghost
Shadow Ball Ghost
Gengar’s best moves may all be legacy, but even with Hex this Pokémon packs a punch and deals the most damage of any counter out there. *inserts obligatory mention of how it faints a lot*
Excellent Azelf Raid Counters
TyranitarTyranitarBite DarkCrunch Dark
Tyranitar may have its competition now in Weavile, but you cannot knock this pseudo-Legendary, it can make do with relatively bad moves and dole out incredible amounts of damage, while consistently being the counter on this list that faints the least.

Weavile is here, and it is worth using, basically being the Dark type equivalent of Gengar. It has a nice movepool and high attack which makes it a excellent lead pick.

Azelf Moveset

I would ask also on this list that the moveset is to be considered, as it can rapidly change the counters seen above. Azelf has access to:

  • Extrasensory Psychic and Confusion Psychic
  • Fire Blast Fire, Future Sight Psychic, and Swift Normal

This lends to those counters changing rapidly, such as Gengar dropping in usage on the dual Psychic movesets, and Houndoom rising considerably when Fire Blast is in play. Due to the sheer power of the moves, Confusion or Extrasensory mixed with Fire Blast will be the hardest moveset you come across.

Weather Effects

Windy weather will allow for a boosted raid, although it will make it a bit harder to tackle. Otherwise, your best options will be to take Azelf in the Rainy and Fog where all the chips will be stacked in favor of your team and not Azelf.
